The Shahyad Tower, also known as the Azadi Tower, is the most recognizable landmark in Tehran and one of the great architectural achievements of 20th-century Iran. Built in 1971 to mark the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire, it was designed by architect Hossein Amanat, who was just 24 years old at the time. The structure blends Achaemenid and Sassanid architectural traditions with modernist form: four soaring legs of pale Isfahan travertine stone that spread wide at the base before converging at a geometric latticed arch, the whole tower rising 45 metres above the surrounding park. This print captures it head-on in full frontal grandeur, the tower filling the frame, the lush green park and tiny visitors below giving scale to its monumental presence, a soft blue sky opening behind.
