Sa'di Shirazi is one of the greatest poets in the history of Persian literature, celebrated for the Golestan and the Bustan, works of moral wisdom and lyrical beauty that have been read and quoted across the world for eight centuries. Born and buried in Shiraz, he is buried in a mausoleum that is one of the most visited cultural sites in Iran. The current structure was designed by Iranian architect Ali Sadegh and completed in 1952, a graceful modernist pavilion of slender columns and a shallow dome set at the end of a long, narrow reflecting pool, the whole complex shaded by tall, dark cypress trees and swaying palms. This print captures the full approach: the pool drawing the eye straight to the pavilion, the cypresses standing sentinel on either side, and a vivid turquoise sky opening above.
