Omar Khayyam was one of the greatest minds of the medieval world: a mathematician, astronomer, and poet whose Rubaiyat has been translated into more languages than almost any other work of Persian literature. He was born and buried in Neyshabur, in Khorasan Province, and his mausoleum stands as one of Iran's most visited cultural sites. Designed by the Iranian architect Hooshang Seyhoun and completed in 1963, the monument is a masterpiece of modernist Persian architecture: a latticed concrete structure of interlocking arches that rise and converge like the petals of a flower, or the verses of a quatrain.
